FAQ

General

  • 1 What are Earth Blocks?

Earth Blocks are also known as Compressed Stabilized Earth Blocks (CSEB). CSEBs are made by compressing the right mix of soil (Silt, Clay & Sand) along with 6-9 % Portland cement (used as a stabilizer). Water is added to the soil-cement mix to get optimum moisture content and the moist mix is compressed in a hydraulic press. These blocks are cured for 21-28 days to reach their full strength.
Earth Blocks are also referred to as Compressed Earth Blocks (CEB) or Compressed Soil Mud Blocks (CSMB).

  • 2 What kind of soils are used to manufacture Earth Blocks?

All soils are not suitable for making Earth Blocks. Suitable Soil for CSEB is more sandy than clayey. An ideal soil for CSEB should contain 15% Gravel, 50% Sand, 15% Silt and 20% Clay. But you seldom get such soils, however, with some knowledge and experience, many soils can be used or modified to use for producing CSEB.

  • 3 Where do you source your Soil?

All our soils are sourced locally, within 4-8kms from our manufacturing plant. All our soil comes from the construction sites doing excavations for apartment basements, which otherwise go into landfills or dumping on roadside or lakes.

  • 4 Are Earth Blocks Burnt?

No, Earth Blocks are only cured with water after manufacture. No cutting of trees for fire wood, no air pollution with smoke from burning.

  • 5 Are Earth Blocks compressed manually?

No, Earth Blocks are manufactured using a hydraulic press to achieve better quality, durability and to maintain sharp, straight edges.

Appearance

  • 1 How do we finish Earth Blocks?

Earth Blocks can be finished in various ways as per the architectural requirements of the client. Pointing is mandatory for all types of Earth Blocks. Additionally, they can be finished with waterproofing or plastering. Plastering can be done using mud plasters, lime plasters and in some cases using cement plaster.

  • 2 Can we paint Earth Blocks?

Earth Blocks can be painted with lime-based or cement-based paints or clear coats. Each comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. For best results, paints should be avoided and leave them in a natural finish and protect them with waterproofing coats.

  • 3 Can we get uniform coloured Earth Blocks?

Soil is a heterogeneous mixture and its colour depends upon the minerals present and organic matter content. Soils from different sources will have different colours, for that matter soil from a single source can also vary in colour every few feet. So the colour of blocks can vary.

Strength and Durability

  • 1 Are Earth Blocks Strong?

Earth Blocks are high-quality construction material and they exceed compressive strength requirements of Soil Based Blocks prescribed by Indian Standard Codes (IS : 1725). Infact the compressive strength of Earth Blocks meets or far exceeds the compressive strength requirements of the conventional building materials like Burnt Clay Bricks and Concrete Blocks (CMUs - Concrete Masonry Units) as prescribed in IS codes IS-1077:1992 and IS-2185-1:2005 respectively.
